A safety training program aimed at helping healthcare staff respond to disruptive and threatening patient behavior led to improved safety for both staff and patients, according to a recent evaluation report completed by the Labor Management Project’s research team. The program was developed by partnership forged by Union Hospital/North Shore Medical Center (Union Hospital), Lynn Community Health Center (LCHC), 1199SEIU and the Massachusetts 1199SEIU Training & Upgrading Fund (TUF).

Creating a Healthy Future for Brooklyn

Creating a Healthy Future for Brooklyn

The healthcare system serving 2.1 million residents of Brooklyn is in crisis, due to widening healthcare disparities, a lack of primary and preventative care options, and hospital closures and financial challenges. Last month, 1199SEIU brought together delegates from eight Brooklyn hospitals to discuss plans, outlined in a report prepared by the Community Strategy Lab for 1199SEIU, NYSNA and the Coalition to Transform Interfaith, to significantly restructure the borough’s healthcare system in order to improve care, strengthen institutions, and become more responsive to patients’ needs. The Labor Management Project sponsored and facilitated this special Delegates meeting, which took place at the New York Marriott at The Brooklyn Bridge.

Top 3 Ways Proposed Changes to Medicaid Could Hurt Healthcare

Top 3 Ways Proposed Changes to Medicaid Could Hurt Healthcare

Medicaid is a federal/state partnership that jointly provides health insurance to low-income adults, children, the elderly, and people with disabilities. Under the Affordable Care Act (ACA, or Obamacare), the federal government matches state Medicaid payments with no pre-set limits. The ACA also called for Medicaid expansion, which was adopted by Washington, D.C. and 31 states, including New York. In the rush to dismantle the ACA, the Republican-controlled Congress and the Trump administration have proposed replacing Medicaid with per capita caps or block grants to states based on pre-expansion Medicaid funding levels.

LMP Advises Nursing Homes on How to Improve Mental Health Services

Over the past 10 years, people with diagnoses of mental illness (depression, bipolar disorder, etc.) have been admitted to nursing homes at higher rates than people with dementia only. Meanwhile, the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) has issued regulations requiring nursing homes to provide “necessary behavioral health services” and for all staff to have the “appropriate competencies and skill sets” to properly care for residents. On December 8, LMP consultants Wanda Johnson and Lois Schram addressed these issues with over 200 individuals from 56 nursing homes who attended a seminar titled “Working Collaboratively to Improve Behavioral Health in Long-Term Care.”

Diabetes Prevention Program Participants Enjoy Farmers’ Market Bounty

As part of the 1199SEIU Diabetes Prevention Program (DPP) at Mount Sinai Beth Israel, the LMP’s Workplace and Community Health Program introduced Health Bucks to participants. Health Bucks are vouchers developed and distributed by the New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene that can be used to purchase fresh fruits and vegetables at all farmers’ markets in the city. Each DPP cohort took a field trip to the farmers’ market in Union Square to make use of the $14 in Health Bucks that each participant was awarded.
