Nurses are the backbone of American healthcare. Across the spectrum of care, they serve as patient advocates, quality improvement ambassadors, innovators, and team leaders. They play critical roles in patient care, pain management, care transitions, preventing infection and falls, and reducing readmissions. For more than a decade, the annual RN Labor Management Initiatives’ Nurse of Distinction (NOD) Awards gala has honored the professionalism, dedication and leadership of 1199SEIU nurses.

In May, 1199SEIU and the League of Voluntary Hospitals and Homes celebrated the 15th Annual NOD Gala. Dozens of nominees took to the stage to learn of the 2018 winners. The selection process was comprehensive: nurses were nominated by their employers, interviewed extensively by a panel of 1199SEIU and hospital/nursing home leadership, and judged based on criteria including clinical expertise, labor-management collaboration, pursuit of professional development, interactions with patients and families, and their personal statements.

Attendees in gowns and tuxedos enjoyed a reception, meal, and dancing interspersed with lively awards presentations at the festive event.
